A lightweight electric scooter is easier to carry, store, and transport when space is limited. A foldable design adds flexibility for short trips, city travel, and situations where you need to take your scooter with you. Whether you're choosing a scooter for yourself or a child, the right option depends on how it will be used, how often it needs to be carried, and which features matter most. If you're comparing different types of electric scooters, explore our full range to find an option that suits your needs.
Why choose a lightweight folding electric scooter?
A lightweight folding electric scooter offers practical advantages when portability matters as much as riding performance.
-
Easy to carry and store: A lighter e-scooter can be more manageable when lifting it upstairs, placing it in a car boot, or moving it into storage at home or work.
-
Convenient for short trips: Foldable e-scooters can suit trips to nearby destinations, local errands, and some urban journeys without requiring a full-sized vehicle.
-
Takes up less storage space: Folding handlebars or stems can make an e-scooter easier to store in a cupboard, garage, or other compact area.
-
Flexible for different lifestyles: Adults may want an e-scooter that fits around work and travel plans, while children need a model suited to their size and ability to ride safely.
How to choose the right lightweight electric scooter
The lightest electric scooter is not automatically the best choice. Compare its weight and folding design with the range, performance, and safety features you need.
Consider weight and folding design
For adults, e-scooters weighing around 15 kg or less are a useful starting point when portability is a priority. For kids, choose a model light enough for the child to handle comfortably. Check the folded dimensions, especially if you have limited storage space or plan to carry the scooter in a car boot.
The folding mechanism should also be quick and secure. Remember, a foldable electric scooter isn't necessarily lightweight, so consider both its weight and folded size before buying.
Choose a range that suits your journeys
Consider your usual travel distance, including the return trip, and whether you can recharge between rides. A shorter range may be sufficient for nearby destinations, while longer journeys may require a larger battery.
Actual range can vary with rider weight, speed, hills, temperature, and road conditions. If you need to travel farther without charging, compare options in our long-range electric scooters collection and balance the extra range against the escooter's weight.
Check motor power and speed
Motor performance affects how a scooter handles acceleration and hills. If your route includes steep inclines or frequent stops, compare motor specifications and climbing ability. For relatively flat routes, you may not need the highest power rating.
Think about the intended rider as well. Adults may prioritise performance for their regular routes, while children's escooters should offer manageable speeds and controls suited to the rider's age and experience. Higher speed is not necessarily an advantage if it makes the scooter harder to control.
Look at brakes, tyres, and suspension
A compact design should still provide the features needed for controlled and comfortable riding.
-
Brakes: Check the braking system and make sure it suits the scooter's speed and intended use.
-
Tyres: Pneumatic tyres can help cushion small bumps, while solid tyres reduce the risk of punctures.
-
Suspension: Suspension may improve comfort over uneven pavement, although it adds components and may affect the scooter's weight.
-
Rider fit and control: The electric scooter should be manageable for the rider's height, strength, and experience.
Lightweight electric scooters for adults and kids
Although adults and children may both benefit from a lightweight design, their priorities are different.
Lightweight electric scooters for adults
For adults, a lightweight folding e-scooter can be easier to carry upstairs, store at work, or take along when using public transport where permitted. If you travel longer distances, compare the e-scooter's range and ride comfort with its weight to find a balance between portability and performance. Explore our adult electric scooters to find more options suited to different riding needs.
Lightweight electric scooters for kids
For children, choose an electric scooter that matches the rider's age, height, and ability to control the handlebars, brakes, and speed. A lighter model may be easier to handle, but stability and suitable speed settings are also important. Check the manufacturer's recommended age range and provide appropriate protective gear and supervision. You can explore our kids electric scooters to find models designed for younger riders.
FAQs
What is the lightest electric scooter that folds up?
The lightest folding electric scooter depends on the models available and their specifications. Compare the actual weight and folded dimensions before buying, especially if you need to carry it upstairs or store it in a small space. Make sure the scooter is still suitable for your required range and riding conditions.
Are lightweight electric scooters suitable for longer trips?
Yes, some lightweight electric scooters can suit longer trips, but portability and range often involve trade-offs. Check the e-scooter's claimed range against your round-trip distance, allowing for hills, rider weight and riding speed. If you need more range, compare long-range models and consider whether the extra weight is manageable.
Do all foldable electric scooters fit in a car boot?
No. Whether a foldable electric scooter fits in a car boot depends on its folded dimensions and the available storage space. Check the e-scooter's measurements against your car boot dimensions before buying, and allow extra room if you need to carry other items.
Are lightweight electric scooters suitable for kids?
Yes, some lightweight electric scooters are designed for children. However, weight alone does not determine whether a scooter is suitable. Check the manufacturer's recommended age range, speed settings, braking system and stability, and choose a model the child can control safely. Appropriate protective gear and adult supervision are also important.
Can I take a non-foldable electric scooter on public transport in Australia?
It depends on the state and transport service. For example, in Victoria, e-scooters can be carried on metropolitan trains, but they must be folded on buses and trams. In Western Australia, e-scooters must be folded and measure no more than 120 × 68 × 40 cm to travel on Transperth buses. Check your local transport operator's rules before travelling, as restrictions vary by service.
